The belief that good triumphs over evil resonates deeply in our psyche through religious, cultural, and political discourses. It is also a common theme in the entertainment media where the struggle between good and evil is frequently resolved through violence. The potential negative impact of media violence on children has long been a public concern. It is even more troubling when U.S. military violence, both in the news and in the entertainment, is often glorified as heroic and patriotic.

El Contrato follows Teodoro Bello Martinez, a poverty-stricken father of four living in Central Mexico, and several of his countrymen as they make an annual migration to southern Ontario. For eight months of the year the town's population absorbs 4000 migrant labourers who pick tomatoes for conditions and wages no local will accept. Under a well-meaning government program that allows growers to monitor themselves, the opportunity to exploit workers is as ripe as the fruit they pick. Grievances are deflected by a long line of others "back home" who are willing to take their place.

Some time in the 1960s, in the heart of Africa, a new animal was introduced into Lake Victoria as a little scientific experiment. The Nile Perch, a voracious predator, extinguished almost the entire stock of the native fish species. However, this new gigantic fish multiplied incredibly fast, and its white fillets are today exported all around the world. Huge hulking ex-Soviet cargo planes come daily to collect the latest catch in exchange for their southbound cargo: Kalashnikovs and ammunitions for the uncounted wars in the dark center of the African continent.

In the Dominican Republic, a tropical island-nation, tourists flock to pristine beaches unaware that a few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians have toiled under armed-guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane, much of which ends up in U.S. kitchens. They work grueling hours and frequently lack decent housing, clean water, electricity, education or healthcare. Narrated by Paul Newman, "The Price of Sugar" follows Father Christopher Hartley, a charismatic Spanish priest, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's poorest people to fight for their basic human rights.

The Big Sell Out is a political film. In various episodes the abstract phenomenon of privatization is depicted in stories about very concrete human destinies around the globe. The documentary tells tragic, tragicomic but also encouraging stories of the everyday life of people, who day by day have to deal with the effects of privatization politics, dictated by anonymous international financial institutions in Washington D.C. and Geneva, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The coca leaf is indigenous to Bolivia and a sacred leaf revered and used by the majority of Bolivians. It is also the source ingredient for cocaine and the target of billions of dollars worth of militarized coca eradication, alternative development and narcotic interdiction efforts.

Fifteen years since George Bush Sr. declared a war on drugs in his inaugural presidential address, cocaine is still a thriving business and the impact of American drug policy on the people of Bolivia has brought the country to the brink of a total social upheaval.

In 2003, the United Nations revealed that for the first time in history, more refugees were disrupted by environmental factors than from war or political persecution. As the number of natural disasters increases and governments spend more time debating their role and responsibility as global citizens than effecting change, Canadian filmmakers Helene Choquette and Jean-Philippe Duval focus on the actual plight of individuals from the Maldives to Brazil who are being uprooted by the degradation of the environment they depend upon to live.

From producer Morgan Spurlock (SUPER SIZE ME) and director Rob VanAlkemade comes a serious docu-comedy about the commercialization of Christmas. Bill Talen (aka Reverend Billy) was a lost idealist who hitchhiked to New York City only to find that Times Square was becoming a mall. Spurred on by the loss of his neighborhood and inspired by the sidewalk preachers around him, Bill bought a collar to match his white caterer's jacket, bleached his hair and became the Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping.

The Take opens in suburban Buenos Aires, where thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave.

All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simple act - The Take - has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head.

A film which is almost guaranteed to make you alternately cry and laugh and most of all leave the screening with an overwhelming desire to change the world, The Take is a powerful manifesto to the power of ordinary people to come together and achieve extraordinary things.

The Challenge:

A fundamental change has taken place in the relationship between people and the Earth. This change requires an equally fundamental change in the way that we govern ourselves.

Just one lifetime ago, basic food, clothes and shelter made up the bulk of our needs. Today, individually and collectively, we consume vast quantities of metals, chemicals, pesticides, fertilizer and, to make it all possible, a lot of energy. Our mushrooming consumption stretches the Earth's ability to absorb our waste.

A country of mountains, Colombia like the other Andean countries where similar U.S. spray-programs have been implemented, constitutes the highland of the Amazon basin, a zone that includes parts of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil. This forest, representing one of the lungs of planet Earth (the other lung being Siberia, an area also undergoing raging destruction), is one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in the world, a delicate and fragile system despite its apparent imposing strength.

Filmmaker Kevin Pina challenges the contemporary view of Haiti, revealing the hidden role of the 'international community' in Haitian politics. This provocative and lively film takes the viewer into parts of Haiti where few Western journalists dare to tread, and includes shocking footage of unreported human rights abuses, some which have been astonishingly conducted by UN forces. Pina's film stands out because it connects the tragic events in Haiti with what he assesses as foreign intervention designed to deter democracy.

In 1975 Annie Mae Pictou Aquash, a 30-year-old Nova-Scotia born Mi'kmaw, was shot dead, execution style, on a desolate road in South Dakota. Nearly three decades later, the crime remains a mystery.

Aquash was highly placed in the American Indian Movement (AIM), a radical First Nations organization that took up arms in the 1970s to fight for the rights of their people. The film provides a glimpse into a period of extraordinary social upheaval in North America, from a native perspective. AIM-like the Black Panthers and anti-Vietnam war protesters-were threatening the established order.

"Iraq in Fragments" illuminates post-war Iraq in three acts, following young boys from each of Iraq's major ethnic Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish communities. Filmed in cinema verité style, the film explores the lives of ordinary Iraqis: whose thoughts, beliefs, aspirations and concerns are at once personal and illustrative of larger issues in Iraq.

When the last of Cape Breton's once thriving coalmines shut down in the late 1990s, the shrinking population of Glace Bay faced chronic unemployment. While covering the crisis, celebrated photographer Nance Ackerman saw what she describes as the human cost of cultural genocide in a white community struggling to come to terms with its loss. It was a tragedy that haunted Ackerman long after her assignment was over.

As the adage goes: "water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink." Our final film in a series on resources and sustainability, "Blue Gold" is an in-depth account of the crisis facing the Blue Planet. The film travels the globe, where the fight to make clean drinking water a right, not a privilege, has already begun.

Due to the success of our first screening (Garbage Warrior), it's been unanimously agreed upon that Cinema Politica Grande Prairie should be hosting film screenings twice a month as opposed to once a month. So we're going to give it a shot, with Debt Trap by David Adkin; a film that is very legitimate and important to a vast majority of citizens, in "these trying economic times" of recession, job-loss and credit default. We'll make up for the films shortness of length with a lively, interactive discussion.
Hope to see you there!
