ARRESTING THE MAYOR

On August 16, 2004, 9 homeless people stormed City Hall in Ottawa to arrest Mayor Bob Chiarelli for inciting police violence against pan handlers and homeless people. They won a written contract to meet the arrestors in order to address their concerns. Candidate for mayor and anti-poverty activist Jane Scharf will be present to lead the post-film discussion.

This film prepares the speaker event of the next Activism Course class to take place on October 25th, 7pm, Marion Auditorium, University of Ottawa: Candidate for mayor and anti-poverty activist Jane Scharf will speak about municipal activism and will present another short film entitled "Arresting Jane Scharf", film makers Ottawa City Police.

SCHOOL BULLIES

2005 / 17 Minutes / English

This short film documents the recent clashes between the administration of York University and student activists. The story format follows student Isabel MacDonald as she becomes increasingly aware of the repressive tactics used by the university. In the climax, city police are hired by the university to intimidate and assault students peacefully gathered in their university centre. The film maker, Isabel MacDonald, will be present to lead the post-film discussion.

The film features world famous historian and York University professor David Noble who will also speak in the Alumni Auditorium, University of Ottawa, in an event to take place on October 23rd, 2006, 7pm.
