Cinema Politica is proud to announce the launch of the newest addition to our VOD catalogue: Fernand Melgar’s VOL SPECIAL.

VOL SPECIAL looks behind the glossy public image of Switzerland’s refugee asylum programs to reveal the grim realities of life in the prison-like Frambois refugee centre near Geneva. Although the guards do their best to treat the asylum-seekers with respect and civility, the fact that nearly 90% of undocumented foreigners in Switzerland are imprisoned and deported without trial is lost on no one.

Frambois’s inmates are often forcibly deported on notoriously dangerous chartered flights to their country of origin, regardless of the threats that the former inmates may face upon arrival. In some particularly dire instances, inmates will request to remain for a few extra days in Swiss prisons to “have a few more days to live” before facing the near-certain dangers of home.

Melgar’s film reveals the stark contrasts between the social value of compassion and the rigid insensitivity of Western immigration policies. We are launching VOL SPECIAL today to mark World Refugee Day as a reminder of the thousands upon thousands of undocumented workers, asylum seekers and precarious people displaced the world over.

This documentary is a timely and haunting addition to our VOD programming, and will be of interest to anyone concerned with prison reform, immigration, and the global refugee crisis.
