Cinema Politica @ The Bloor is collaborating with the 15th Anniversary of aluCine Latin Film + Media Arts Festival, which runs from April 2nd to the 5th. First established in 1993 in Toronto, this annual event celebrates Latino films and culture by exhibiting a panorama of works by Latin Americans from around the world. Our local in Toronto is co-presenting a series of shorts entitled “On Identity Politics & Human Rights” on April 5th at 7pm at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Beginning in Bolivia, MINERITA traces the stories of miners facing brutally dangerous work conditions, but who then worsen this inhuman inferno by engaging in nightly prowls for women. Turning to the Dominican Republic, TECHOS ROTOS focuses on a 12-year-old girl whose dream of making her first communion is marred by an absent mother and dysfunctional family environment. JERMINACION / ZEED SPROUTING, an animated film, follows another young girl whose hope for a good education is tainted by the challenges of rural life in Mexico, leading her to resort to her imagination for solace. A theme of imaginative pursuits continues in HIT ME UP IF THE WORLD ENDS / SE O MUNDO ACABAR, ME DE UM TOQUE, where a string of letters is sent from Brussels to a potentially nonexistent recipient in São Paulo – an unstable pen pal relationship from the start, any hope for connection is then ruptured by the political turmoil in Europe. Also highlighting a human longing for communication, SILENCIO CHINO / CHINESE SILENCE follows a Chinese boy in Venezuela whose upbringing in an abusive family foreshadows his adult struggle to resist oppression. And perpetual cycles of violence continue in DESPUES DE LA Z, where a teenage boy is pressured into a shady Cartel in Mexico.

Merging politics, identity, and human rights, these shorts connect individual stories to larger oppressive systems of power and are congruent with Cinema Politica’s vision to exhibit marginalized narratives.

We encourage you to come out to this fabulous screening series and to also check out other Latino docs in our network
