Local Spotlight: CP Kuwait - Project 189

Cinema Politica would not be Cinema Politica without the dedicated and tireless groups, organizations and volunteers running our locals. To highlight this incredible work, we periodically zoom in on individual locals and in doing so, learn about their specific activities, histories, challenges, triumphs, and more. These stories help us paint a picture of the sprawling abstract thing known as “Cinema Politica”. For our ninth spotlight, we asked one of our newest locals, CP Kuwait – Project 189 to send us their thoughts. Check out their beautiful response below!

We believe that each of us has the power to contribute in creating a better community, and we, at Project 189, want to build up further on this belief by combining the power of inspiring films and promoting community participation. “لمجتمعنا / To Our Society: Bringing you the Power of Film” / “Cinema Politica, Kuwait, Project 189” is a film festival to ignite positive discussion on prevailing human rights issues in Kuwait, the Middle East and the rest of the world.

It seeks to motivate awareness and to connect us all in order to create a strong inclusive society—a society that cares and wants to see a better future for all members of our society.

Discrimination, exploitation, slavery-like work conditions and trafficking are common practices endured by many domestic workers. One contributing reason is that a large part of the general population is unaware of what elements, practices or behaviors promote - whether directly or indirectly - discrimination, slavery, forced labor and trafficking of people. These prevailing gaps of awareness have continued to hinder the progress towards the eradication of all forms of human rights abuses. With this in mind, the aim of this film project is to promote community participation to address human rights issues by increasing awareness using informative, thought-provoking and inspiring documentaries – a human rights film festival focusing on equality, respect, non-discrimination and participation.

Project 189 is an organization aiming to protect, promote and improve the rights of migrant workers in the Middle East - where all their rights are respected; where they can live in freedom, free from fear, violence and abuse. Our mission is to strengthen labour and human rights law in the Middle East through advocacy, awareness and empowerment and to help build strong institutions that assure fundamental protection and an active society that promotes inclusion.

Our efforts to accomplish our mission have been done through different activities including carrying out focus group discussions with employers of domestic workers to understand perceptions, promotion of international standards for recruitment agencies, 52px, a project using art to empower and change attitudes of employers towards domestic workers and campaigning for a one day off a week, Arfaj initiative where through art women are empowered in and for transition in the local shelters, one project has been shortlist in 2015 by the HiiL Innovating Justice Challenge and last week our question to the candidates for the UN Secretary General position was shortlisted to the top 30 questions from 1500 questions where we asked “if you would be the next Secretary General, what would you do to protect the rights of domestic workers in the Middle East?”.

لمجتمعنا / To Our Society: Brining you the Power of Film” / “Cinema Politica, Kuwait, Project 189” is made possible by you and Cinema Politica, en.v, the Middle Eastern Partnership Initiative and Shaheed Park.
