New Acquisition: VESSEL

Cinema Politica is thrilled to announce that Diana Whitten’s courageous documentary, VESSEL, is now available for screenings throughout the Cinema Politica Network.

VESSEL follows fourteen years of work by Dr. Rebecca Gomperts and Women on Waves, a Netherlands-based not-for-profit women’s health organization that provides offshore medical abortions for women in countries where the practice is banned or inaccessible. By transforming a Dutch-registered boat into a mobile and legitimate abortion clinic by Dutch law, Women on Waves is able to provide safe abortions in international waters, which begin a mere twelve nautical miles from shore. VESSEL depicts the necessary difficulties faced by Gomperts’ boat as it maneuvers through international and national laws: the boat frequently docks amidst open conflicts between pro-choice and anti-abortion protests, and the ensuing local media circus is as likely to help or hinder Women on Waves’ cause. The film also follows the development of Women on Waves’ sister-program, Women on Web, which provides support for abortion-seeking women around the world whilst actively training local support groups in dozens of countries around the world.

VESSEL champions the irrepressible power of a passionate community organized around a good idea. Whitten’s film argues unequivocally that women must be at the centre of any debate on women’s health, and will make an excellent addition to any screening series throughout the Cinema Politica Network.
