Our Engaged Community: CP Board Member Tom Waugh's “My Coming Out” contribution

Dr. Thomas Waugh (or Tom as we lovingly know him at CP - pictured above with CP Executive Director Svetla Turnin and programmer Ezra Winton) is a long-term member of Cinema Politica’s Board of Directors, regularly attends CP Concordia screenings in Montreal, and is a staunch advocate for LGBT rights in Canada and around the world. He was instrumental in fundraising for Cinema Politica’s CHILDREN 404, which intersects with his work at Concordia University as the Research Chair in Documentary Film and in Sexual Representation.

Never one to sit idle, and perhaps spurred by his scholarly interest in queer confessional filmmaking, it seems only fitting that Tom has made a heartfelt contribution to the Montreal Gazette’s “My Coming Out” column. In “I'm afraid this letter is going to cause you both a lot of pain”, Tom shares portions of the letters that he wrote to his parents when he came out to them as a gay man. Somewhere between confessional documentary and autobiographical essay, Tom’s article offers his coming out story as something to be shared, simultaneously embracing and criticizing the triangular relationship between “personal”, “public”, and “political”.

Cinema Politica would like to thank Tom and all of the “My Coming Out” contributors for writing with the same generosity and honesty that we hope to achieve at our screenings.
