Launch Party for Cinema Politica and Feminist Zine Fest!

On Thursday, October 15, 2015 the Feminist Zine Fest Pittsburgh and Cinema Politica Pittsburgh came together to organize a launch party for both groups! Cinema Politica Pittsburgh will be screening free documentary films on the second Thursday of every month at Union Project in Highland Park. Feminist Zine Fest Pittsburgh will be an annual event to celebrate feminist self-publishing in Pittsburgh and other cities. This year the FZF was held on Sunday, October 18 at the University of Pittsburgh Frick Fine Arts Building.

The launch party for both groups featured a free film screening of Boy I Am by documentary filmmakers Sam Feder and Julie Hollar. The film explores the intersection of feminism and transgender experience by following the lives of three transgender men. Following this powerful film, film goers had a discussion about our own gender identities and how we understand feminism. Participants discussed feminist parenting of transgender children, redefining masculinity and femininity, and how to build community around these experiences. It was a wonderful way to kick off the Feminist Zine Fest and set the tone for a productive, collaborative conversation about gender, race, and sexuality.
