ABOUT THE AWARD
The Alanis Obomsawin Award for Commitment to Community and Resistance
is meant to celebrate the efforts and talents of a filmmaker who has shown a commitment to community and resistance in documentary filmmaking by showcasing the stories of underrepresented and/or marginalized communities engaged in struggle. The award also honours a filmmaker whose dedication to social justice is connected to, but goes beyond filmmaking practices and who actively participates in civii society, engages in collective action and uses film as a platform for progressive and radical social and political transformation.

The Alanis Obomsawin Award for Commitment to Community and Resistance was inaugurated in 2011 by Cinema Politica and was first given to John Greyson (read more here). The creation of this award was inspired by Ms. Obomsawin's dedication to social justice and political documentary, and has been instrumental in informing the work of Cinema Politica.

The recipient of this award will be announced in early 2015 and a special event with them will be organized in the spring of the same year. The award comes with a cash prize of $500 and a complementary trip to Montreal for the event. The nomination period ends on December 15, 2015 at midnight.
