This workshop gathers activists, filmmaker and programmers to discuss the intersection of documentary filmmaking, screening and activism in order to understand how filmmakers can make work that is political as well as how screenings of such work can contribute to the advancement of progressive social movements as tools for social change, platforms for political transformation and bridges for community building.

ANTICOSTI follows director Dominic Champagne’s quest to save one of the last virgin islands of the planet, the magnificent Anticosti. The island is a metaphor for our planet -- its civilization caught between the dream of a life in harmony with nature and the menace of industrial landscape grabbing our last unspoiled pieces of land.

Martha Stiegman/ CA/ 2013/ 59

** This screening is organized by Barriere Lake Solidarity - Solidarité Lac Barrière in collaboration with Cinema Politica. Director Martha Stiegman will be in attendance and a conversation with the representatives of the Algonquins of Barriere Lake: Marylynn Poucachiche, Tony Wawatie and Norman Matchewan will follow the screening.**

Honour Your Word is a powerful doc following new Algonquin leaders, as their community fights to protect their land, their way of life, and their language.

The Peoples' Social Forum will open on August 21 with a traditional Algonquin ceremony at sunrise and a celebratory peoples' march in the afternoon. August 21 and 22 will see hundreds of participant-led workshops happen simultaneously at the University of Ottawa.  Saturday, August 23 will be a day of movement assemblies.  The last day there will be a final all-movements assembly and closing ceremony.   The Peoples' Social Forum is also a joyous gathering with special exhibitions, work and people’s history tours, film screenings, critical mass rally, a pow-wow, street performances, concerts, games, and building new relationships. The Peoples Social Forum is a means of stimulating debate, discussion and furthering our sense of community and collective action.
