We are very excited to announce that our newest distribution title, FINDING SALLY by director Tamara Mariam Dawit, will have its North American premiere with the Hot Docs Online Festival on Thursday, May 28 until Monday June 6. This year’s Hot Docs International Documentary Festival has been adapted to online viewership as a result of the current pandemic.

FINDING SALLY is an intimate and illuminating film that depicts a family whose archival dig through the past leads them to re-connect and share both pain and loss, love and healing. Sally’s story bridges personal and family narratives with the political history of Ethiopia during the military coup and revolutionary struggle of the 1970s. The Dawit family is implicated in the conflict, as Sally joins the revolutionary struggle in defiance of her father, a high-ranking bureaucrat. Dawit’s searching and deeply introspective narration ties this compelling story together. Today, Ethiopia is going through important political changes once again, and FINDING SALLY sheds light on an under-represented chapter of the country’s living history.

FINDING SALLY brings together a fierce group of women to piece together a forgotten history with a wealth of fascinating archival footage and recovered family photos. Through Dawit’s skillful storytelling we come to understand something deeper and more complex about the nature of the filmmaker’s quest, and the path it takes her on. And yet, at the end of this captivating journey, the question remains: Who was Sally?
