Since March 2023, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been investigating two non-profit organizations in Montreal, Quebec, the Chinese Family Service of Greater Montreal and the Sino-Quebec Centre, following mainstream medias’ allegations that these organizations have been functioning as secret police stations for China. Thus far, there has been no evidence found, leading to no convictions. The two organizations and their director, Xixi Li, have since experienced various negative impacts from the stigmatization, including financial loss, risk of foreclosure, and emotional and mental distress. Two other individuals, Tina Zhu and Yipeng Ge, have been similarly targeted and impacted by the media.
This documentary, made by Chinese-Canadian youths in Montreal, seeks to make sense of what has been happening for a hundred years since the passing of the Chinese Exclusion Act by exploring the historical and pervasive phenomenon of “yellow peril,” the effects of Sinophobia and cyber-racism, and the importance of fighting back.
